FACULTY
This course is taught by Christy Cotner, DNP, MSN, PMHNP, FNP, Shantell Jackson-Burns, DNP, ARNP, PMHNP-BC, and Abby McNeil, DNP, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC.
Christy Cotner is a psychiatric-mental health and family nurse practitioner who teaches the APEA Live Review Course & Clinical Update for PMHNPs. She is the director of the PMHNP program at Western University of Health Science and previously was the FNP program director at California Baptist University. Dr. Cotner is in clinical practice at Riverside Medical Group in Riverside, Calif., where she delivers psychiatric-mental health care. Her past primary care experience includes an impactful role at Riverside Medical Clinic, where she focused on primary care and developed a comprehensive care plan that reduced hospital readmissions by 30%.
Shantell Jackson-Burns is a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner who is a clinical instructor and the program coordinator of the BSN to DNP PMHNP program at Louisiana State University School of Nursing. She teaches the APEA Review Course & Clinical Update for PMHNPs. Dr. Jackson-Burns practices also practices at Ally Mental Health, a private mental healthcare practice she established in 2019. Her 13+ years of PMHNP practice include positions in correctional healthcare and an acute mental health unit. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society and several national and state NP organizations, including the Association of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
Abby McNeil has earned dual national board certification as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner and a family nurse practitioner. She teaches the APEA Review Course & Clinical Update for PMHNPs. Dr. McNeil has focused her career on improving access to mental healthcare by serving vulnerable, underserved communities and teaching PMHNP students. She has been a PMHNP for more than 17 years and served as a PMHNP program director and assistant professor for 11 years. In addition, she has provided psychiatric telehealth services to children and served as coinvestigator for a HRSA-funded grant to build a behavioral health work force through integrated care.
